O.H. Byron’s ‘The Modern Bartenders’ Guide’ (1884)
This book recorded the first Martinez recipe, which was to be made the same as a Manhattan, except using gin not whisky. Unhelpfully, he lists two Manhattan recipes! This new recipe uses ingredients from both, and uses whiskey to bring a hint of grain and wood; flavors that were part of gin at that time.
